Citadel Layer paints are formulated to be slightly thinner and more translucent than their Base paint counterparts, which are thicker and designed for a solid, opaque coat. This makes Layer paints perfect for building up colour, adding highlights, and creating smooth blends and transitions on your miniatures. They're meant to be applied on top of a Base paint, allowing you to gradually add brighter tones and define the raised areas of your model.

Unlike Contrast paints, which are a "three-in-one" solution for a basecoat, shade, and highlight, Layer paints give you more control and are part of the traditional painting method of building up from a darker colour to a lighter one. This technique results in a richer, more detailed, and natural-looking finish.
